A fine day for England, one they desperately needed. When they lost Andrew Strauss and Alastair Cook early on - on a pitch offering nothing, to any bowler - there were fears of capitulation and embarrassment. But the toss Andrew Flintoff won was vital and, through patience and determination, Paul Collingwood has anchored their innings superbly. Ian Bell never looked particularly fluent, but did bat solidly - which was the theme of their batting all day. Until Pietersen came to the crease, of course - but even he was relatively calm.
